Record a covering and pregnancy checks
On this page
A mare's breeding record holds each covering, the pregnancy checks that follow it, and how it ended in a foaling. Vivetra records the findings as facts; it doesn't make management calls for you.
Recording needs the clinical-authorship permission, which vets have by default. Everyone else can read the record.
Open a mare's breeding record
- On the mare's record, select Breeding (see Work with a horse's record).
Coverings on record shows each covering with its date, method, stallion, the heat cycle it belongs to, any semen collection it used, its pregnancy checks and its foaling.

Record a covering
- Under Record a covering, enter the Covering / breeding date.
- Choose the Method: Live Cover, AI Fresh, AI Cooled or AI Frozen.
- Choose the stallion in In-system stallion, or for an outside stud enter the External stallion name and External stallion registration.
- Choose the Heat cycle this covering belongs to. This is optional, but it means a mare bred twice in one cycle is watched from that cycle's ovulation rather than from each covering date.
- Select Save covering.

For frozen or shipped semen, enter the Straw / batch number from the straw or tube. If the semen was collected at your practice, you can also choose the Semen collection recorded at this practice (see Record semen collections).
If you pick a stallion with no sex on file, Vivetra asks you to tick I have confirmed this stallion before it saves.
Record a pregnancy check
- On the covering, open Record a pregnancy check.
- Enter the Check date, and the Gestation day and Method (Ultrasound, Palpation or Other).
- Choose the Finding: Pregnant, Not Pregnant, Twins Detected or Inconclusive.
- Select Save pregnancy check.
You can't add checks once a foaling is recorded for the covering.
Record the foaling
- On the covering, open Record foaling outcome.
- Enter the Foaling date, and the Gestation length (days), Foaling-ease score (1–5), Placenta passed at and any Complications. Under Foals, fill in one block per foal, so twins are two foals: the birth status, Sex, the Linked foal patient record if the foal already has one, and the IgG test result.
- Select Save foaling outcome.
