Write a prescription

On this page

Record a prescription on the patient's chart from your formulary. Vivetra checks it against the patient's recorded allergies, and for controlled drugs against the prescribing vet's registration.

Open the patient's record and select Prescriptions under Related records. You need permission to view the full chart to open it. Only someone allowed to prescribe can record one, and the prescribing vet you pick must be allowed to prescribe too.

Record a prescription

The page shows the patient's Recorded allergies above the form, so check them first.

  1. Under Write a new prescription, choose the drug in Drug (from formulary).
  2. Choose the Prescribing veterinarian.
  3. Check Administered / prescribed date. It starts as today; change it for a late-entered or paper script.
  4. Enter the Strength and Dosage form, for example 50 mg and tablet.
  5. Enter the Directions / dose / route, then the Quantity, Unit and Refills authorized.
  6. Select Record prescription.

You'll see Prescription recorded. and it's added to Existing prescriptions for this patient, which shows each one with its drug, directions, quantity, refills, whether it's Controlled and the prescribing vet.

If you see an allergy warning

If the patient has a recorded allergy to the drug, you'll see ALLERGY WARNING — this prescription was NOT recorded. Nothing is saved yet, and everything you entered is kept.

It's a warning, not a block: prescribing anyway can be the right clinical call. To go ahead, tick the box at the bottom of the form that starts I have read the recorded allergy to, naming the drug, and select Record prescription again.

Only allergies recorded against a formulary drug are checked (see Keep the problem list and allergies up to date › Record an allergy).

Controlled drugs

For a controlled drug, the prescribing vet's controlled-substance registration has to be current. If it has expired, or been suspended or revoked, the prescription isn't recorded and the form says why. Registrations are kept under Track staff controlled-drug credentials.

Food animals and the UK cascade

Two extra parts of the form only appear when they apply:

  • Livestock patients get Livestock — meat withdrawal / milk discard (always staff-entered — never computed). Choose the Withdrawal basis (Label, FARAD consult or Clinical judgment) and enter the Meat withdrawal date and, for a dairy animal, Milk discard until. Vivetra records the dates you enter; it never works them out for you.
  • Practices in the UK or Ireland must choose a Cascade tier (UK/Ireland — required).

Checked against Vivetra 0.265.4.4.
